Eco-friendly production of high quality charcoal

The production of charcoal is one of the oldest technologies known to mankind for a long time. The unique properties of wood charcoal are applicable in dozens of industries. Charcoal, as a reducing agent, was used in forges as early as 15-16 century. The metal produced using charcoal is less brittle and less susceptible to erosion, more resistant to weathering. It was for the production of charcoal that many European countries, especially France and England, lost their forests. The unique feature of charcoal – the absence of carbon monoxide in combustion products – has made it stand out among many types of household fuel.

Historically, the earliest were pit and heap charcoal burning. It is these methods of production that are still used by many peoples in Africa and underdeveloped countries, both for cooking and for sale. Maintaining such a heap is also a dangerous job, fraught with the risk of death in the process of the so-called feeding of the heap – adding firewood during charcoal burning. The existence of this mode of production is due to the lack of significant investment, since all that is needed is water, turf and firewood.

The so-called “dirty technologies” in the form of horizontal or vertical barrels have become widespread. In addition to the fact that these devices are not environmentally friendly, they give a reduced charcoal yield due to the combustion of part of it. Partly, the charcoal turns out to be small and cracked, since during the drying stage, elevated temperatures and steam coming out of the wood tears a piece. In such kilns more than 70% of the original wood mass is emitted into the environment. Emissions contain phenols, acids, alcohols, resins, aldehydes, ketones and other substances that poison people and nature. Trees near these installations dry up and people develop lung diseases. It is known that charcoal burners in the time of the Demidovs, serving heap production, died early. And significant harm has been done to nature since those times.

The production of charcoal on a global scale in recent years has exceeded 50 million tons per year.

95% of all charcoal in the world is produced in an environmentally unsafe way, i.e. using “dirty technologies”.

At the same time, 1 ton of charcoal gives 4 tons of harmful emissions.

The production of charcoal for domestic purposes has grown strongly in recent years and is showing a trend towards further growth. It is used in barbecues, barbecues, grills, fireplaces, fireplaces. The rare properties of charcoal, both as a reducing agent and as a raw material for the production of activated carbon, indicate its need for the life of society. Not to mention its use in agriculture to restore land and increase yields, as well as a feed additive in animal husbandry.

But there are problems on a global scale that have not been resolved to this day:

– Deforestation and the use of “healthy valuable trees” in the production of charcoal;

– Environmental pollution by industrial emissions;

– Seasonality of production;

– Human factor and additional labor costs.

Only a small number of modern manufacturers of charcoal kilns, this is no more than 5%, produce environmentally friendly equipment.

GreenPower is an international bioenergy company founded in 2001. We specialize in ‘pyrolysis’, ‘gasification’, ‘charcoal activation’ processes and related fuel preparation systems.

Environmentally friendly technology for the production of high-quality charcoal implies a system of carbonization of carbon-containing raw materials, including firewood, energy wood, wood waste, fuel briquettes (Pini-Kay, Ruff, Nestro, Nielsen).

When carbonization or pyrolysis of plant materials (including liquid products) containing carbon, in addition to the production of charcoal, heat energy is generated for the preliminary drying of raw materials or for the domestic needs of the enterprise. Realizing all the above described problems of the growth of pollution levels all over the world and using 20 years of experience, we have developed equipment for carbonization in which there are no harmful emissions into the atmosphere. We manufacture eco-friendly kilns that are both personnel-friendly and environmentally friendly.

The productivity of one furnace, depending on the moisture content of the raw material, whether it has been pre-dried, is from 15 to 100 tons of charcoal per month. Such a furnace is equipped with an automated control system, which greatly simplifies the control over the technological process, all data are displayed on the control screen and recorded in the event log. For servicing 3 ovens, 1-3 people are enough. It is recommended to include in the package of delivery: elements of logistics, preliminary drying, trolleys, tipper for charcoal. Fully equipped furnace reduces labor costs, saves time required for production it increases productivity, thus taking care of the company’s employees and their health.

Charcoal on our equipment is of high quality and mechanical strength, excludes fines.

Our kilns meet modern standards and customer needs.

GreenPower takes a comprehensive approach to solving the problems of each client. It is possible to develop an individual solution, taking into account all requirements and optimizing your investment. Design work according to your tasks, size and characteristics of the site, etc.

From our side, it is mandatory to carry out commissioning and training of personnel. We are interested in the successful development of the business of our partners and provide warranty and service.

SEE MORE HERE: EQUIPMENT FOR THE PRODUCTION OF ACTIVATED COAL

To stop degradation of forests and deforestation of territories and reduce the level of harmful emissions into the atmosphere, it is necessary:

– to use wastes of logging, wood and furniture industries;

– in the presence of free land resources – to allocate separate land plots, plantations, for planting trees, the so-called energy wood;

– the productivity of raw materials should correspond to the volume of waste at the enterprise (as a rule, 3000–20,000 m³ per year), thus, long-distance transportation of raw materials, which increases the cost of production, is excluded;

– use modern equipment with high energy efficiency and productivity for wood carbonization;

– modern charcoal kilns must meet environmental quality standards;

– simultaneous production of charcoal and electricity for the needs of the enterprise;

– at the international level – support and development of enterprises producing environmental equipment, allocation of funds and grants; introduction of such equipment at state-owned enterprises.
