The seas and oceans are already so polluted with plastic that they cannot fully provide the wealth that we used before. The economic losses associated with water bodies alone amount to $ 2.5 billion.
“But plastic doesn’t appear out of nowhere in the ocean,” Andersen notes. “New research shows that 1,000 rivers bring 80 percent of the plastic into the ocean. The ecosystems of these rivers are suffering. Freshwater lakes suffer, ecosystems on land suffer. ” But plastic does not get into rivers by a wave of a magic wand, continues the head of UNEP.
