Straw Torrefaction: Efficient Use of Agricultural Waste

Straw is one of the most common types of agricultural residue, with hundreds of millions of tons produced annually worldwide. Unfortunately, much of this waste is still burned in the open, contributing to severe air pollution, declining soil fertility, and health risks for local populations. Agricultural waste torrefaction offers a sustainable alternative to this harmful practice.

🔥 Why Torrefaction?

Straw torrefaction is a mild thermal treatment applied to biomass under oxygen-free conditions at temperatures ranging from 230°C to 300°C. This process transforms raw straw into hydrophobic torrefied straw, also known as torreficate — a solid biofuel with properties similar to fossil coal:

  • Higher density and energy density of torrefied straw
  • Resistance to moisture (hydrophobicity)
  • Easy to grind and transport
  • Low volatile torrefied straw content, reducing emissions during combustion

Torrefied straw pellets or briquettes can be used directly in boilers, furnaces, or in co-firing straw torrefaction applications with coal, requiring no major equipment modifications.

🧱 Why Briquetting Before Torrefaction?

Raw straw with ~10% moisture has a bulk density of only ~70 kg/m³, which drastically limits reactor efficiency. Briquetting before torrefaction increases density to 350–400 kg/m³ — over five times more — improving heat transfer and enabling uniform thermal processing.

⚙️ Straw Torrefaction Process

  • Drying and Crushing – Prepares the straw for briquetting by reducing moisture and particle size
  • Briquetting – Compacts the straw into 32 mm diameter briquettes (length: 30–100 mm)
  • Straw Torrefaction Process – Heats the briquettes in anaerobic conditions to final temperatures of 230–300°C
  • Cooling and Packaging – The torrefied straw pellets or briquettes are cooled and packaged as specified

✅ Advantages of Torrefied Straw

  • Higher Energy Density – Increased fixed carbon content enhances fuel performance
  • Hydrophobic Torrefied Straw – Resists moisture, making storage and transport easier
  • Environmental Gains – Reduces CO₂ emissions, avoids open burning, and repurposes biomass
  • Economic Benefits – Ideal as a clean, renewable fuel for industrial boilers and thermal systems
