Human skin is home to many pathogenic microorganisms that do not show their pathogenicity in its normal state. In the damaged tissue, these microorganisms show their invasiveness; in poorly healing wounds in the deep layers of the dermis, anaerobic microorganisms (for example, Bacteroides, Clostridium) can cause suppuration, due to the fact that they are removed from the antimicrobial effect of air oxygen. Aerobic microorganisms such as Staphylococcus epidermis, Corynebacteria, and Propionobacteria, which usually also inhabit human skin, can cause skin damage if the integrity of the skin is compromised.
